A Salute to Small Business – The Backbone of Our Community

Dear Members,

May is National Small Business Month—a time to recognize, celebrate, and uplift the entrepreneurs and innovators who power our local economy. At the Southside Business Men’s Club, this month holds special meaning. Since our founding in 1932, we’ve championed the spirit of enterprise and stood as a steadfast pillar for Jacksonville’s business community.

This month, we shine a spotlight on the small businesses that drive growth, create jobs, and build community in Northeast Florida. From family-owned shops to cutting-edge startups, your perseverance and vision continue to inspire.

Each year since 1991 the Southside Businessmen’s Club has awarded the Dyess Hartley Award for small business person of the year. Mr. Hartley a long-time member of the Southside Business men’s Club started his business from his garage printing business cards in 1963. At this month’s meeting we will be once again presenting this award to a deserving business owner who has demonstrated what it takes to succeed in business. I hope you will come out and join us as we celebrate you!

Why Small Business Matters

•  99.9% of U.S. businesses are small businesses

•  Over 60 million Americans are employed by them

•  They fuel innovation, foster local character, and keep our dollars circulating locally

Let’s commit to shopping local, referring fellow members, and supporting the businesses that have long supported our community.

As we celebrate Small Business Month, I encourage all members to think about how we can lift each other up—not just in May, but all year long. Whether it’s through mentorship, collaboration, or simply giving a referral, your actions have power. Let’s keep Jacksonville thriving, one business at a time.

Sincerely,

Ken Petsch
