Issue 314, January 6, 2026
Following the merger of Jacksonville and South Jacksonville in early 1932, the Southside Business Men’s Club was founded by a small group of civic-minded individuals who wanted to improve the working environment on the Southside of Jacksonville. At that time, the Southside’s connection to Jacksonville consisted of a single bridge and an old ferryboat. Only one telephone existed on the Southside recorded as number 367, belonging to Mrs. H. P. Phillips.
The paragraph above is taken directly from our club’s website and outlines the history of our great organization and how it began. The spirit of the men and women who came before me and held the position of President has not been lost on me. In fact, I have grown to have a deep respect and admiration for each and every one of them—especially for the challenges they faced, and more importantly, how they overcame those challenges.
We have come a long way in our 93-year history—from one bridge and one phone line, to a world where everyone carries a cell phone. In today’s environment, where we have countless ways to stay connected through weekly newsletters, websites, and social media, the time we spend together at our lunch meetings and social events serves as a tribute to our past and a reminder of what truly matters: personal connection.
I would like to sincerely thank my officers who have become great friends, our Board of Directors, and all those who offered guidance and support along the way. I also want to recognize the many volunteers and sponsors who helped make each event this year enjoyable, and for everyone who participated and benefited from our civic work.
In closing, I would like to wish Mark Geil, our incoming President for 2026, and his slate of officers, great success in the coming year as they continue to improve our club while remaining true to its principles.
Ken Petsch
2025 President
